Division of Chemical Literature (1948-1975)

1948   Division of Chemical Literature founded (Norman C. Hill, acting chairman).  
1949   First Divisional symposium on "The University Library as an Aid to Scientific Work", chaired by Norman C. Hill, presented at the 115th ACS National Meeting in San Francisco.  
1949   First Divisional luncheon held at the 115th ACS National Meeting in San Francisco (G. Malcolm Dyson, guest speaker).  
1949   First joint symposium (with Division of Chemical Education) on "Foreign Chemical Literature. Language Instruction", chaired by James W. Perry, presented at the 116th ACS National Meeting in Atlantic City.  
1949   Austin M. Patterson Award for documentation of chemistry established by the ACS Dayton Local Section; first recipient, Austin M. Patterson, received the Award at a meeting of the Dayton Local Section.  
1950   First elected Divisional chairman: E. J. Crane.  
1950   First issue of Divisional bulletin Chemical Literature published (Ben H. Weil, editor).  
1951   First ACS Advances in Chemistry Series (No. 4) based on a Divisional symposium on "Searching the Chemical Literature" published.  
1953   First technical demonstration of equipment for the preparation, reproduction, and utilization of technical information sponsored at the 124th ACS National Meeting in Chicago (46 companies participated).  
1955   First Divisional Regional Meeting organized in Houston on February 25.  
1959   10th anniversary of the Division celebrated at the 136th ACS National Meeting in Atlantic City.  
1961   First Local (Delaware Valley) Chemical Literature Group formed, cosponsored by the ACS Delaware and Philadelphia Local Sections (Carleton C. Conrad, chairman).  
1961   ACS Journal of Chemical Documentation (J. Chem. Doc.) started (Herman Skolnik, editor).  
1966   Documentation Abstracts (DA) started (cosponsored with the American Documentation Institute and Special Libraries Association).  
1966   Documentation Abstracts, Inc. (DAI) organized (with a CINF representative as a member of the DAI Board of Directors).  
1968   First tutorial session on "Wiswesser Line Notation", sponsored by the Division, conducted at the 155th ACS National Meeting in San Francisco.  
1969   DA changed its name to Information Science Abstracts (ISA).  
1973   25th anniversary of the Division celebrated at the 166th ACS National Meeting in Chicago.  

Division of Chemical Information (1976-1998)

1976   First Vendor's Seminar/Workshop, sponsored by the Division and presented by CAS, at the 171st ACS National Meeting in New York.  
1976   Herman Skolnik Award established to recognize outstanding contributions to and achievements in the theory and practice of chemical information science; first recipient, Herman Skolnik, received the Award at the 171st ACS National Meeting in New York.  
1977   Austin M. Patterson Award expanded to honor E. J. Crane and renamed Austin M. Patterson-E. J. Crane Award (cosponsored by the ACS Dayton and Columbus Local Sections; the CINF chairman is a member of the Selection Jury); first recipient of the joint Award, Ben H. Weil, received the Award at a meeting of the Columbus Local Section.  
1978   First Tri-Society Symposium on "Future of Chemical Information", cosponsored with the American Society for Information Science (ASIS) and the Special Libraries Association (SLA), presented in conjunction with the SLA 69th Annual Conference in Kansas City.  
1978   Divisional representation on the CHEMTECH Editorial Advisory Board established; first representative: Cynthia H. O'Donohue.  
1979   Divisional logo introduced.  
1980   Subdivision of Chemistry and the Law formed (Howard M. Peters, chairman).  
1982   ACS Outstanding Intermediate Division Performance Award received.  
1983   ACS Division of Chemistry and the Law formally founded (Hubert E. Dubb, chairman).  
1984   First joint session with the ACS Society Committee on Chemical Abstracts Service conducted at the 188th ACS National Meeting in Philadelphia.  
1984   Symposium on "Chemical Information Science", organized by Herman Skolnik and Kurt L. Loening, presented at the first International Chemical Congress of Pacific Basin Societies in Honolulu.

1985   ACS Computer Secretariat formed (CINF was a founding member).

1987   Clearinghouse for Chemical Information Instructional Materials established (jointly with the Special Libraries Association).  
1987   ACS Outstanding Intermediate Division Performance Award received for the second time.  
1987   Division's formal Mission Statement published.  
1988   Poster "Chemical Information in the Computer Age" created for the Journal of Chemical Education.  
1989   Divisional Newsletter in a new format, CINFnews, published (Bonnie Lawlor, editor).  
1989   Student Scholarship Award established to recognize chemists pursuing graduate studies in information, library, or computer science, leading to a career in chemical information; first recipient, Joan M. Evans, received the Award at a meeting of the ACS Philadelphia Local Section.  
1990   Information Science Abstracts observed its 25th anniversary.  
1992   Divisional Meritorious Service Award established to recognize outstanding contributions to the Division; first recipient, W. Val Metanomski, received the Award at the 204th ACS National Meeting in Washington.  
1992   Salary Survey: Scientific Information Professionals with a Focus on Chemistry published (Patricia E. O'Neill and Joanne L. Witiak, editors).  
1993   50th anniversary of the formation of the Chemical Literature Group in 1943 celebrated at the 206th ACS National Meeting in Chicago.  
1994   First National Chemical Information Symposium (NCIS), chaired by Guenter Grethe, organized at the University of Vermont, Burlington.

1997   Division recognized as one of the pioneer organizations in information science in the ASIS "Pioneers of Information Science in North America" report (Robert V. Williams, project director).
