32. MANAGING SCIFINDER SCHOLAR. Ann. D. Bolek Science-Technology Library, The University of Akron, Akron, OH 44325-3907

In April 1998, The University of Akron began using SciFinder Scholar which allows scientists and engineers to search Chemical Abstracts themselves for the years 1967 to the present. However, like the Chemical Abstracts Academic Account, it is only available from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m., Monday through Friday, with additional hours of availability on the weekends. The database requires that special software be installed on the user's computer, and this software connects the user through the Internet to the Chemical Abstracts computers in Columbus. Most of the users have been able to do their searches without any help, but convincing them to try SciFinder Scholar in the first place has been a challenge. Its popularity has increased as searches were needed and by word-of-mouth from other users. We started out with one concurrent user, but, by August, it was difficult to sign on most evenings and Saturdays, and a second concurrent user was added in September. This poster describes how the author manages SciFinder Scholar at her university.
